New York, New York!
So good, they named it twice! Isn’t that what they say? At the beginning of the month, we took to the skies and headed off on a 4-day whirlwind trip to New York City
It was go, go, go from the moment we landed, and I pounded the streets in an effort to see everything. That said, I obviously didn’t see everything in 4 days but managed most of the major landmarks….Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, 5th Avenue, Rockefeller Centre, The Manhatten skyline, Times Square and we squeezed in 3 Broadway shows! ( my daughter India is studying Stage Management and is desperate for a career in The Big Apple! )
Although this wasn’t a work trip, I had to visit Saks and Bergdorf Goodman just to be inspired by their homeware and loungewear departments….always thinking about work! I dodged the rain in Anthropologie and noticed their mural looked a lot like a Tobias Hodson painting and loved their window displays.
We took a boat trip around the island, saw the sights and then it poured down! And then some! New York does everything bigger!!
Just before I left London, I noticed on Instagram that some of the brands I follow were in New York for NY Now, a big retail trade show, and I wondered if I could visit. Thanks to the lovely Hannah Turner, who designs and creates the most beautiful ceramics, I got the opportunity to go along to the show at Javits Centre on our last day in the city. Like the rest of our trip, it was a lightning visit, and I really needed more time.
After seeing Hannah and admiring her gorgeous stand I just had time to run around upstairs to see Jonathan Adler, and the man himself was there to show off his beautiful collection.
I could have just moved into Justina Blakeney’s lounge for Selamat Designs and met lovely Phoebe from Langdon Ltd, Australia who makes beautiful cushions which Anthropologie have snapped up….now there’s a thought!
Maybe next year Tobias Design might appear in New York….that would be exciting, and I certainly need to go back as there’s so much that I didn’t see….Greenwich Village, The Flat Iron building, Ground Zero memorial, Soho, Chinatown…the list is endless. So it’s goodbye to NYC for now and back to London to finish up preparations for our stand at Top Drawer next month.
I’ve been working in retail for more years than I dare admit! One of my favourite parts of the job is attending trade exhibitions and over the years I’ve made new friends, been inspired, discovered lots of lovely new products and spent too much money! It can be hard work traipsing around, especially somewhere like Maison & Objet in Paris, but it’s fun too, especially when you have good company…Jane Sweet, I’m talking about you!
We decided at the beginning of the year that we would apply for Top Drawer for September 2018. So it was time to submit an application and a design of our stand. That’s where I called Ollie! You’ll have noticed that I have sung his praises on many occasions. Not being very technical myself ( who am I trying to kid??? NOT AT ALL!) I could only watch in wonder as Ollie took my thoughts and sketches and created our design on screen. We submitted our application and waited…..
And……I’m very excited to announce that our application was successful and we’ll be exhibiting September 9th to 11th at Olympia, London! The show is only open to trade visitors but if you are attending you’ll find us in the main hall, stand M32.
